A1ONE

Growing up in Teheran, A1one a.k.a. Thana became familiar with propaganda stencils depicting martyrs and soldiers, but also with the revolutionary ones from the 1980s. His work is characterized by a combination of ancient Persian motifs and contemporary urban scenes. ‘Other than the calligraphic part of my work, my visual imagery is very much inspired by the social documentary photography of my father,’ he explains. Although he also works on canvas and exhibits in art galleries, the street still inspires most of his art: ‘A location, a spot, affects in many ways the visual and verbal aesthetics of the place and the image you can create. Sometimes I am conscious of it, at other times I feel I am learning and experimenting’.
